Mattu University

Department of Civics and Ethical Studies

About the Department

Founded in 2007, the Department of Civics and Ethical Studies has grown from offering shared courses within Mattu University to a thriving department with both undergraduate and postgraduate programs. Our BA in Civics and Ethical Studies, available in regular, weekend, and summer formats, equips students with the knowledge and skills to become ethical and engaged citizens. We also host an MA in Peace and Development Studies, offered in similar flexible formats.

Looking ahead, we aim to expand our postgraduate offerings. We envision programs in Peace and Security Studies, International Relations and Diplomacy, Governance and Development Studies, and Federal Studies. These additions will further contribute to our nation's sustainable development.

Beyond our core programs, we play a vital role in the university community. Our current Civics and Ethical Studies courses, like Logic and Critical Thinking, Global Trends, and Moral and Civic Education, are integral to the freshman experience in all Mattu University programs.

HoD's Message

On behalf of the Department of Civics and Ethical Studies at Mattu University, I'm proud to highlight our ongoing contributions to the country's progress and development. We play a pivotal role through impactful teaching, research, and community service initiatives.

Our undergraduate and postgraduate programs, housed within the College of Social Science and Humanities, go beyond theoretical knowledge. We equip our graduates with both the theoretical background and practical skills they need to be active agents of positive change. This, in turn, empowers them to contribute meaningfully towards social justice, nation-building, and economic transformation.

Our commitment extends beyond the classroom. We actively encourage our academic staff to conduct problem-solving research across Ethiopia, tackling critical issues related to law, human rights, governance, conflict management, and more. Their work, often funded by the college and other institutions, generates valuable findings that benefit both the academic community and local communities.

The Department of Civics and Ethical Studies embraces its naturally multidisciplinary nature. This allows us to collaborate effectively with other social science fields, fostering both disciplinary and thematic research initiatives. In doing so, we contribute meaningfully to both academia and the wider community, offering practical solutions to real-world challenges.

We are proud of our role in shaping future generations of ethical and engaged citizens who can contribute to a more just and prosperous Ethiopia.
